CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

CHARLEY

Four hours to landing

* * *

Charley was so over this flight. She’d been cabin crew for over fifteen years and she absolutely loved her job. She’d done short-haul and long-haul flights in her time, but by and large she much preferred long-haul. In many ways a day of short hops to Scotland or over to the continent were far more exhausting with the constant take-offs and landings, than a straight eight-hour flight to Barbados, or even the long flight from London to Chile, which takes over fourteen hours.

But this flight… this flight had to be the longest and most stressful of her career. She’d experienced demanding passengers before and normally she had all she needed on board to satisfy their every whim – with the possible exception of sea urchins as one first class passenger had requested a few years earlier. One or two demanding customers were to be expected, but to have an entire party of them was exhausting. And then two of them go and die!

Charley knew it was not the fault of the dead women, but she couldn’t help but resent the fact they’d died on her flight, when all of the responsibility lay with her. Not to mention the fact there was likely a murderer on board. Charley’s closeness to all that had happened made everything seem quite normal. She had become desensitised and the realisation made her feel a little sick. She should be shocked, scared, worried, something, but all she wanted was to land and have the Bajan police take over from her.

The Bajan police – shit, she was going to have to make a statement which meant it would be hours even after they landed before she could switch off and treat herself to some local rum punch. At this rate, she’d be forgoing the punch and just mainlining rum.

Charley checked her watch; four hours to go before they landed – over halfway. With a start she realised she hadn’t actually eaten anything since long before they’d taken off that morning. No wonder the shot of gin she’d necked earlier was sitting heavy in her tummy. Technically she’d missed her mealtime, but that wasn’t her fault and she wouldn’t be any use to man nor beast if she fainted while she was carrying out her duties. She opened one of the trollies and found a ham sandwich. After double-checking it was properly sealed, she ate it quickly, washing it down with a bottle of water; ignoring the lure of the miniatures.

‘Hey, Charley, is it okay if I take my break now?’

Charley jumped and spun round, one hand clutching at her chest. ‘Jesus Christ, you scared the shit out of me.’

Jen winced. ‘Sorry. I thought you would’ve heard me.’

‘Don’t worry, I was miles away. What was it you said?’

‘Can I take my break now? I know it’ll have to be a bit shorter than usual, but I’ll set an alarm and be up again in time to prepare for landing.’

Charley sighed, technically it
